Jose Luis Mendilibar backs Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde

Eibar manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has defended Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde from recent criticism.

Valverde's side returned to the top of La Liga with a 3-0 win at the Estadio Irpura, but he has still been the subject of criticism since the start of the season.

Much of the negativity surrounding the former Athletic Bilbao boss is connected to Barcelona's slip ups in the Champions League and Copa del Rey at the back end of 2019-20.

"Losing two games early on in the season, is not normal for Barcelona.

Eibar boss Jose Luis Mendilibar: Marc Cucurella a 'proper footballer'

Jose Luis Mendilibar believes Eibar have ‘a proper footballer’ on their hands in Barcelona loanee Marc Cucurella after he starred against Real Madrid.

Cucurella was starting only his third Liga game for Eibar on Saturday but had a role to play in all three of their goals in a 3-0 victory, and the Basques have an option to buy the young left-sider from Barca next summer.

“I saw a good team take to the field,” Mendilibar said after the match.

Mendilibar: I'd like England move

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has admitted his desire to manage in England but admitted his limited language skills could make it tough.

The 57-year-old signed a new one-year contract extension at the Basque club but confirmed his ambitions for a change of scenery in the future.

“I would like to learn English well in order to move to England and Coach,” Mendilibar told an interview with Marca.

Mendilibar had 'no doubts' on Eibar stay

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has clarified he had ‘no doubts’ about his decision to extend his stay with the club for a further year.

The 57-year-old took charge of Los Armeros in 2015 after they were spared relegation by the courts and has gone on to establish them in La Liga.

There were reports the Basque would depart at the end of the season amid links to Real Sociedad, but he has committed his future to the club.

Mendilibar extends Eibar stay

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar will stay at the club for a further season after committing his short-term future to the Basque club.

The Basque took charge of Los Armeros in 2015 after they were spared relegation by the courts and has gone on to establish them in La Liga.

However, his contract was due to expire at the end of the season and reports in the Spanish press predicted the 57-year-old would depart the Ipurua Municipal Stadium.

Report: La Real want Mendilibar

Real Sociedad have reportedly opened talks with Jose Luis Mendilibar about the Eibar boss becoming their new Coach.

La Real are in need of a new Coach after sacking Eusebio Sacristan earlier in the week, and Marca claims Mendilibar is their first choice to succeed the former Barcelona midfielder.

Eibar in sixth after late winner

Jose Luis Mendilibar admits it is ‘extraordinary’ that Eibar are sixth in La Liga after Ivan Ramis’ 94th-minute header beat Leganes 1-0.

Ramos climbed highest deep in stoppage time to not only punish Leganes for losing Dimitris Siovas to a red card but moved Eibar above Sevilla in the European places, yet Mendilibar insisted their objective was still survival.

“This season has showed it’s difficult to be up here,” the Coach said after the game.

Mendilibar demands improvement

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has called on his side to be more decisive at both ends of the pitch ahead of their clash with Betis.

The Basque club have won only two of their 11 league outings to date and their squad has been stretched by a number of injuries this campaign.

“We have to be strong in defence and attack better,” Mendilibar told reporters, as quoted by Marca.

“Our performances have not been bad but we have made mistakes at both ends which have cost us this season so far.

Mendilibar: No Eibar penalty right call

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has played down suggestions his side should have had a penalty during their 3-0 defeat at Real Madrid on Sunday.

Takashi Inui went down under a challenge from Casemiro inside the area, but the Coach of the Basque club revealed the Japanese midfielder told him there was no contact.

“Inui informed me it was not a penalty,” Mendilibar told TV channel Movistar at the end of the match.

“He would not lie about this and he told me that Casemiro did not touch him, so there is nothing more to discuss.

Mendilibar calm despite defeats

Eibar Coach Jose Luis Mendilibar has called for calm and admitted he won’t ‘change everything’ despite back-to-back La Liga losses.

After an opening day win at Malaga, the Basque club have lost successive games against Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla but Mendilibar doesn’t think too much needs to change when they play Leganes on Friday.

“After a bad match we will not change everything,” Mendilibar told his press conference, as quoted by Marca.
