DONE DEAL: FC Porto confirm return of defender Pepe

FC Porto have confirmed the signing of former Real Madrid defender Pepe on a two-and-a-half year deal following his exit from Besiktas.

The central defender has agreed a contract until the summer of 2021 with the Portuguese champions, who are currently in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The 35-year-old won two league titles with Porto in a stint between 2004 and 2007, before subsequently joining Madrid, where he won two La Liga crowns and three Champions League titles.

FC Porto will announce the signing of former Real Madrid defender Pepe today following his exit from Besiktas, according to reports.

Diario AS cite a report from Portuguese newspaper A Bola claiming the central defender has agreed a return to the club and an official announcement is close.

Reports: Pepe cancels contract at Besiktas

Former Real Madrid defender Pepe has left Besiktas six months before his contract expires, according to reports.

The 35-year-old made 52 appearances for the Turkish giants since joining on a free transfer from Madrid in the summer of 2017.

Injuries have hampered the experienced central defender in recent weeks although his exit from Istanbul appears to have come as a surprise.

Diario AS say financial reasons may be behind the outcome, which has yet to be confirmed by Beikstas.

Pepe: Costa said he fouled me

Pepe claims Diego Costa ‘acknowledged that he fouled me’ in the build-up to his first goal for Spain against Portugal.

Costa scored twice in Spain’s World Cup opener with Portugal, which finished 3-3 after Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick, but the Atletico Madrid striker appeared to shove Pepe off the ball before firing past Rui Patricio.

“There are incidents that don’t even need the VAR,” the former Real Madrid defender said at a Press conference for the Selecao’s final group game against Iran.

Nacho: Madrid miss Pepe's experience

Nacho Fernandez admits Real Madrid ‘miss the experience’ of former defender Pepe but insists that ‘competition is tough’ for places.

The Portuguese defender joined Turkish champions Besiktas on a free transfer this summer with the only incoming central defender being Jesus Vallejo, who returned from Eintracht Frankfurt on loan.

“I learnt so much from Pepe and we miss his experience,” Nacho told Cadena Ser.

Pepe: Madrid atmosphere not good

Pepe has outlined the difference in ‘passion’ and ‘atmosphere’ whilst playing for Besiktas instead of former club Real Madrid.

The Portuguese central defender joined the Turkish champions this summer after a decade at the Bernabeu and he has now stated the atmosphere in the Spanish capital was not as favourable.

“The fans here are hugely passionate and every game you feel the noise and atmosphere from the stands,” Pepe is quoted as telling Turkish media by Diario AS.

Pepe claims Real Madrid “had to motivate ourselves to play” as “the fans weren’t passionate like they are at Besiktas.”

Pepe ended a trophy-laden, decade-long spell with Madrid over the summer as he joined Besiktas, but the defender appeared to hit out at Los Blancos’ fans for not supporting their team enough.

“Madrid? There, we had to motivate ourselves to play. The fans weren’t passionate like they are here,” the defender told La Sexta.

Pepe targets more titles

Former Real Madrid defender Pepe has revealed he made the decision to join Besiktas due to the attitude of the club’s board and fans.

The 34-year-old completed his move to the Turkish champions earlier this week and insisted his aim was to keep winning titles.

“I spent ten perfect years at Real Madrid and became a real fans favourite,” Pepe told reporters upon his unveiling.

“The fans loved me a lot and I had a great relationship with the city too – both of my daughters were born in Madrid.
