What Barcelona, Sevilla and Villarreal must do to progress to Champions League Round of 16

Barcelona, Sevilla and Villarreal were all in Champions League action on Tuesday night, and they now know what they need to do to go through.

We have now had five of six group stage matchdays for three of the five La Liga clubs involved in Champions League football this season.

On Tuesday night, we had a win, a draw and a defeat in what was a mixed night for Spanish football.

But where does it leave each team heading into matchday six? We take a look below.

Barcelona

Barcelona could not find a way past Benfica on Tuesday night, drawing 0-0, and that leaves them in a bit of a pickle.

The Blaugrana will need to beat Bayern Munich away in their final game should Benfica beat Dynamo Kyiv in their last game.

If Benfica slip up, Barca will progress, currently two points ahead of the Portuguese side.

A draw will not do due to Benfica possessing the better head-to-head record.

Sevilla

Sevilla are now back in with a shot after beating Wolfsburg 2-0 thanks to goals from Joan Jordan and Rafa Mir.

Los Nervionenses head into the final game third place one point behind Salzburg, needing to beat the Austrian side to progress. No other result will do.

Villarreal

Villarreal suffered a late defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 despite dominating for much of the tie.

But they were helped out by Young Boys taking a point from Atalanta, and that means a point will do it for the Yellow Submarine.

They face Atalanta away from home in their last game, and should they lose, the Italians will go through instead.

A win or a draw for Villarreal will send them through.
