City target €65m Laporte

Manchester City are said to be close to triggering the €65m release clause of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte.

The former France Under-21 defender has a release clause of €65m which reportedly increases to €75m next summer, with his current deal at the Basque giants running until 2020.

A report by Cadena Ser’s Bruno Alemany states the English Premier League leaders have decided to activate the clause this month before it increases in July.

Laporte out of Madrid clash

Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash with Real Madrid through suspension.

The central defender picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Sunday’s entertaining 2-2 draw at Deportivo La Coruna and has not missed a minute of action all season.

The Basque giants will now need to find a partner for Unai Nunez in the heart of defence with Yeray Alvarez still unavailable with Xabier Etxeita the most likely candidate to play.

Barcelona ponder Laporte move

Barcelona are in a ‘dilemma’ over the potential signing for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, according to reports in Spain.

El Mundo Deportivo state officials at the club have lined-up the 23-year-old as a prime transfer target, but Coach Ernesto Valverde does not wish to raid his old club.

The relationship between Valverde and the defender is reportedly ‘very close’ with the report stating the two’s closeness was the primary factor why Laporte turned down Manchester City for a San Mames stay.

Athletic struggle to late Sweden draw

A last minute strike from substitute Inaki Williams earned Athletic Bilbao a point at Ostersunds but leaves them in precarious position in Group J.

Jose Angel Ziganda’s side have only two points from their opening three Europa League group stage outings and sit four and five points behind Zorya and group leaders Ostersunds respectively.

Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz had given the Basque club the lead after Inigo Cordoba robbed the home side’s goalkeeper Aly Keita but second half strikes from Alhaji Gero and Curtis Edwards turned the game on its head.

Laporte open to offers

Athletic Bilbao centre half Aymeric Laporte has not ruled out a future move away from the club, despite turning down an offer from Manchester City this summer.

The 22-year-old rejected the approach from Pep Guardiola’s side before swiftly putting pen to paper on a new four-year deal at San Mames, however it now appears he would be more open to any future offers.

"You have to think about offers and, if new proposals come along, I will study them,” Laporte is quoted as saying by El Correo.

Laporte never considered Spain

Aymeric Laporte has revealed that he never considered chosing France over Spain and links were due to the media 'stirring it up'.

Laporte, who was born in Agen in south-west France, has represented Les Blues up to under 21 level but was rumoured to be considering selecting Spain over the country at senior level, however his recent call-up to the French national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers appeared to put those to bed.

Lopetegui: Laporte never an option

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has stated that Aymeric Laporte was never an option for Spain, while Jose Callejon was selected over Paco Alcacer.

The Spanish squad announcement for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania was made one day after Athletic Bilbao defender Laporte - who had been strongly linked to chosing Spain as his national team - was included in the France squad, and Lopetegui ruled out the idea that his inclusion was ever a possibility for La Roja.

France: Laporte for Spain wrong, but...

The French Football Federation (FFF) claims Aymeric Laporte would be “wrong” to switch to Spain but admits he would be far from a first choice.

Marca reported last week that Spain boss Julen Lopetegui had convinced Laporte to play for Spain over France, the Athletic Bilbao defender eligible for Spanish citizenship due to his Basque heritage.

“I read in a Spanish newspaper that he planned to play for Spain, I wish him good luck, but I think he’s wrong,” FFF President Noel Le Graet told L’Equipe.
