Celta Vigo President confirms club are powerless to stop €40m Gabri Veiga exit amid Premier League interest

Celta Vigo President Carlos Mourino has publicly admitted that his club can do very little to stop Veiga leaving the club this summer, amid frenzied talk of a summer move.

Veiga, 20, has 9 goals and 3 assists for Celta this season, finding himself amongst the top 10 scorers in La Liga this season. That’s despite the fact he operates as an attacking midfielder.

Signing a new contract last season, Veiga has a €40m release clause in his deal. Celta were interested in renewing his deal, but MD have carried Mourino’s words, conceding that if a club meets his release clause, there is little they can do.

“We don’t want to sell Gabri Veiga, but they are going to buy him from us. And we can’t do anything there.”

“We know some of his offers and it is impossible to reach them. ” Gabri is a Celta player, he has that feeling. After the game with Espanyol, he went to see Celta B.”

The likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United have been strongly linked with Veiga, as have Real Madrid, but Los Blancos are not yet willing to pay that release clause.

“There are several teams behind Gabri. Real Madrid? They haven’t asked us, we don’t know if they will have called the player. Of the top 10 in the Premier League, four have asked about him.”

“For us, and to make it clear, he is not for sale. We have nothing to negotiate with anyone. We refer [interested clubs] to the [release] clause. The decision is Gabri’s, he will play wherever he wants.”

Teammate and goalscoring partner Iago Aspas has advised him on his next move, but it may be that he is seduced by an offer this summer. This is Veiga’s first season as a starter at the top level, having been used sparingly last season by Celta.
