Real Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro claimed last night was the worst of his life as his error gifted Athletic Bilbao a late draw in the Basque derby.
The two arch rivals faced off for the sixth time in just over two years at the Estadio Reale with La Real looking to extend their lead at the top of La Liga.
However, despite enjoying the better of the game, and heading into added time with a 1-0 lead thanks to Alexander Isak’s penalty, Remiro’s mistake ensured a late twist in the tie.
It was a bad night for old faces against former clubs, as Remiro’s teammate Inigo Martinez was sent off against old employers, and Remiro admitted the last 24 hours have been difficult.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s been the worst night of my life”, as per reports from Marca.
“I have not been able to sleep and I’ve spent hours crying, thinking about what happened and having a drink.
“But, going to training today was the best thing I could do.
“Normally with wide free kicks, I dominate, but, once the ball came in, my intention was to go towards it instead of diving laterally.
“I don’t know why I went with my fist, because it was not a ball for that, maybe I was worried about going to catch it with both hands, I don’t know.”
Remiro will have no time to dwell the issue, as Imanol Alguacil’s side face Sturm Graz in the Europa League in midweek, before a weekend trip to Osasuna ahead of the international break.
