Official: Ex-Barcelona star Thierry Henry becomes Monaco Coach

Former Barcelona star Thierry Henry believes it is ‘fate’ that his managerial career will begin at Monaco after being confirmed as their new Coach.

Henry has signed a contract with Monaco taking him through to 2021 and is faced with the immediate task of pulling the principality side out of Ligue 1’s relegation zone.

“It seems like fate that I will begin my managerial career here,” he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“Monaco will always be close to my heart. I’m incredibly excited to be given this opportunity but now the hard work must begin.”

The 41-year-old added on the club’s official website: “First of all, I thank Monaco for giving me the chance to coach a club who are so special to me.

“I’m very happy to come back to Monaco and extremely determined to face the challenges ahead.

“I can’t wait to meet the players and start working with them.”

Henry began his playing career at Monaco, turning out for their first team between 1993 and 1999 and winning a Ligue 1 title, as well as the 1998 World Cup with France.

The retired attacker also scored 49 goals in 121 appearances for Barca, lifting two Liga titles and a Champions League, although his best spell came at Arsenal.

He returns to Stade Louis II after a two-year stint assisting Belgium Coach Roberto Martinez, helping the Red Devils reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Monaco, for their part, were crowned French champions in 2016-17 but are four points adrift of safety, with just one win to their name.
