Dos Santos criticises referee

Giovani Dos Santos has been heavily critical of the referee in Mexico’s World Cup defeat against the Netherlands.

El Tri were leading the Round of 16 fixture until the final minutes when Wesley Sneijder equalised before Arjen Robben won a penalty, converted by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, to send the Oranje through.

Dos Santos accused referee Pedro Proenca of favouring the big names, according to Marca.

“Teams with bigger names always get treated differently. I don’t know why,” the Villarreal forward said.

“There were plenty of fouls against Mexico and what happened for the penalty is clear.

“Robben dived again and again and the penalty is non-existent.

“You’re never able to win against referees. All you can do is raise your head and wait for what happens.”

Dos Santos did however admit that Mexico had victory in their hands and threw it away themselves.

“In a few minutes we lost all the work we did in the World Cup,” Dos Santos lamented.

“We also need to learn how to lose. We were making history.

“It hurts the way it happened. We did a great job by scoring, the team was good, but [the goal conceded from] the corner was a disgrace.”
