Barcelona singing section could face club ban for Champions League clash

Barcelona have managed to paliate the impact of not being at their home Camp Nou this season, making Montjuic feel much more homely, in no small part due to the improved form of the side, and the increased attendances. Yet they may lose some of that home advantage against Brest in the Champions League, due to an ongoing dispute between the fans and the club.

The singing section or Grada d’Animacio is comprised of various supporters’ groups, and Barcelona have communicated to them that they want the fans to cover the €21k in fines that have been handed to them for supposed grievances in that area of the stadium. Something that Sport say they have not done, and have no intention of doing. They are seeking a meeting with the club to understand exactly what the fines are for, and to create dialogue on the matter. Barcelona are refusing to do so, and if they do not pay the fee before the end of Monday, then the Blaugrana will ban their own fans in that section from entering the stadium for their Tuesday night clash with Brest.

It is certainly drastic and unusual action, but perhaps a fresh approach to preventing out of order behaviour from fans. Equally, it is understandable why the majority of fans in that section would be outraged at being asked to contribute to a fine they have nothing to do with, and potentially facing a ban for it. In addition, as season ticket-holders, Barcelona will not lose money from their non-attendance on Tuesday.
