Joao Felix’s chances of staying at Barcelona to increase with Xavi Hernandez departure

Joao Felix will return to Atletico Madrid after Barcelona’s trip to Sevilla on Sunday, and it’s far from certain that he will be back in Catalonia for next season. The Portuguese forward has had an underwhelming spell at Los Blaugrana, and current manager Xavi Hernandez does not fancy him as a concrete option in attack.

However, with Xavi expected to be sacked next week and replaced by Hansi Flick, Felix’s chances of spending another season at Barcelona are sure to increase, as per Diario AS. Before, it was widely reported that a deal with Atleti was not a priority, but if Flick gives his approval, it could be actively sought out.

Atleti have no plans to keep Felix, and if he does not return to Barcelona, he will be shipped elsewhere as Diego Simeone does not count on him at all. This summer’s European Championship will allow an opportunity to put himself in the shop window.

It remains to be seen how Felix’s situation plays out over the summer. Barcelona are reportedly in the market for a new left winger, which would surely limit his chances of a return, although if Atletico Madrid allow a very financially-viable deal, they could snap him up for another 12 months anyway.
