Real Mallorca make decision on Javier Aguirre replacement

Real Mallorca will part ways with the manager that led them to just their second Copa del Rey final in the 21st century at the end of the season. Javier Aguirre is out of contract at the end of the campaign, and Los Bermellones will go in a different direction next season.

Aguirre has brushed off questions about his future in recent months, with some linking him to the Mexico job too. Although Mallorca look set to survive, a little less comfortably than last season’s midtable finish, and their cup exploits, Marca say that Sporting Director Pablo Ortells is in advanced negotiations with his prospective replacement. Departing Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate is believed to be their chosen man for the job, and the details will be settled once La Liga finishes. Former Granada and Olympiakos manager Diego Martinez was the other alternative, but they have opted for Arrasate, Ortells preference, following a successful spell at El Sadar.

The Mexican manager would be just to feel hard-done by, having surpassed expectations over the past two full seasons, and worked miracles in his first few months to keep them up. However it is true that he has struggled to get the best out of summer investments Cyle Larin and Sergi Darder. Arrasate looks as safe a choice as could be found to replace him.
