Barcelona drop interest in Premier League midfielder targeted by Manchester United

Barcelona are on the hunt for a new pivot in midfield, but it looks unlikely to be Everton and Senegal international Amadou Onana. The 22-year-old has been in Barcelona’s sights for some time, but looks as if he will be out of their reach financially.

Earlier this year it was reported that manager Xavi Hernandez had singled out Onana as his preferred option for central midfield, and Sport say that the Blaugrana were willing to pay €45m for him. However BILD  are reporting that Everton will not consider letting him go, even if they are open to a sale, for less than €60m. The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked to Onana, and they may well be willing to pay over the odds for the impressive youngster.

This news is coupled with the fact that Barcelona are increasing their interest in Mats Wieffer, although they will face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for him too. He is still thought to be a cheaper alternative though, and the Blaugrana will be trying to cut as many corners as possible this summer when it comes to summer moves.
