Atletico Madrid captain ghosts contract offer with deal running down

Atletico Madrid have a number of contract situations to resolve as they enter 2024, but perhaps the most pressing is that of captain Koke Resurreccion. The 31-year-old seems likely to remain at the Metropolitano, with both sides declaring a desire to see that happen, but the lack of progress on a deal will raise concern amongst the Colchoneros.

Koke reportedly has had a contract offer on the table for some time from Atletico Madrid, as per Diario AS, but is yet to respond to it. The Rojiblancos have been trying to renew players on lower salaries of late, and with Koke reportedly on €16m per annum, their latest offer is less than half of that. The information goes on to say that there is no rush on the new deal, and that Atletico consider his contract a priority.

President Enrique Cerezo recently claimed that there would be an announcement soon on the matter, and there is no dubt it is hard to imagine Koke leaving the club he has been at all of his life, but it could create tension between the two parties. In addition, with Mario Hermoso, Stefan Savic and Axel Witsel all out of contract at the end of the season, Atletico will be keen to establish how much money there is available for other deals.
