Controversy over Las Palmas captain Jonathan Viera cleared up amid health issues

Las Palmas captain Jonathan Viera has been coy on his future of late, but his absences from Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta’s starting XI have been cleared up.

Viera had stated in recent weeks that he was enjoying his football because ‘there wasn’t long left’ for him, and this had been coupled with President Miguel Angel Ramirez remarking that he had earned the right to leave for free whenever he saw fit. Las Palmas fans were thrown into further confusion after he warmed the bench in various games, and then missed their 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano entirely last Sunday.

On Tuesday, as reported by Diario AS,  Viera’s partner published a message on her social media intimating that a cancerous tumour in her uterus had been detected, which has now been removed. The tumour was removed ‘right on time’. Viera would then post a message with the caption ‘Always with a smile. That was always our best weapon. I love you’ on his Instagram, which was followed by numerous messages of support from fans and teammates.

Viera’s unexplained absence had caused no shortage of consternation in Gran Canaria, with fans questioning a club icon. However thankfully it appears the situation has been resolved with a happy ending.
