Real Madrid’s Kepa ticks off Spanish journalists – ‘It’d be a good sign if we talked about football’

Real Madrid goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was become rather frustrated with the questions he was being asked by the media, as he attended their questions ahead of their Champions League tie with Braga on Tuesday evening.

Los Blancos come off the back of a 1-1 draw with Sevilla in La Liga, where Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti made it clear they were frustrated with the refereeing. Vinicius Junior had a penalty appeal turned down, and Real Madrid were correctly disallowed two goals.

Asked about the refereeing on Saturday, Kepa said he was not thinking about the refereeing.

“In the dressing room we are focused on what we do. We focus on what we can control, we are not going to talk about the referees. It is better not to talk and continue with our thing.”

Real Madrid TV have also been highly critical of referees in recent weeks, putting out hit reports claiming that referees are biased against them before games, and again after matches.

“Videos are videos, they are there for everyone to see, we focus on playing. There they are, the performances are there. We focus on our own and control what we can. We are players and we want to play.”

By the end of his press conference, he was asked about the difference between refereeing in Spain and in England, to which Kepa showed frustration with the constant questions about officials.

“What I can say from the last 5 years is that there isn’t as much talk about referees during the week. It would be a good sign if we talked about football here, because it is what is important and what we should analyse.”

At this point three of the eight questions asked to Kepa were about referees, which is no doubt frustrating for the former Chelsea goalkeeper. All of these questions about referees were asked by Spanish journalists from Madrid-based media, and there seemed little interest from any of them in talking about the clash against Braga.
