Second La Liga player closes social in successive weeks in response to abuse

Girona forward Valentin ‘Taty’ Castellanos has shut down his social media after fans piled on the Argentine. Castellanos missed a key chance against Barcelona, and it was followed by a flood of abuse on social media.

MD report that Castellanos closed his social media around three hours after the game following an onslaught, at 2:00am.

Castellanos had been sent through on goal after 55 minutes, and with both the goal or a square ball to Viktor Tsygankov begging, Castellanos elected to shoot but his effort went wide of Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s goal.

This is the second such story in as many weeks, after Nico Williams did the same. He missed two major chances in Athletic Club’s Copa del Rey semi-final against Osasuna, and received backing from the stands. However online the reaction was not so kind, with Williams shutting down his social channels afterwards.

In Italy, Dusan Vlahovic has also closed his socials after heavy abuse from Juventus fans. It appears to be becoming a worrying theme for football, and there seems little hope of more regulation coming into place.
