Xavi Hernandez pondering El Clasico line-up with injury doubts causing issues

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has had Real Madrid’s nummer in recent Clasicos, but is facing a number of headaches ahead of the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final. In particular, the injury issues are forcing him to re-work his scheme.

As was the case for the entirety of March, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele are expected to miss the match. But in addition, Andreas Christensen is out of the tie. Frenkie de Jong is also struggling to make the match, as per MD. Marcos Alonso looks likely to replace Christensen in defence.

They say that development has caused Xavi to question is usual four-midfielder scheme with Sergio Busquets and Gavi further forward. Sergi Roberto looks set to reprise his role from the first leg in midfield, but the question is whether Franck Kessie begins in midfield, or Gavi drops back with Ferran Torres or Ansu Fati playing in a front three with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

Relevo say Barcelona are more likely to maintain their four-midfielder scheme. Pablo Torre and potentially youngster Marc Casado will be the only midfield options on the bench, although Eric Garcia could be used as a pivot, as was the case against Elche on Saturday night.

Given Xavi has been comfortable absorbing pressure in previous Clasicos it seems more likely he would use four midfielders, also considering the fact that Barcelona do not need to win the match. Raphinha will start on the right, where Ferran Torres is much more effective. Ansu Fati, despite his goal, is not in great form, and thus neither have a strong argument for altering the tried and tested.
