Barcelona at risk of losing three points over ineligible player complaint

Elche have submitted a formal complaint to the RFEF disciplinary committee over Gavi, who played against them in their 4-0 defeat at the weekend to Barcelona. After Gavi’s senior registration was removed, Elche say he was not eligible to play.

Gavi was registered through a temporary court ruling in February, but after that ruling was removed, has been forced to revert to his youth contract licence. After the cancellation of licence, a player cannot play again in La Liga. Should Barcelona be found in the wrong, it could cost them three points.

Yet Relevo say they are unlikely to be punished. The semantics weigh heavy here, where Gavi is reverting to an old licence rather than having one cancelled and registering again as a Barcelona youth player. They say it is unlikely to lead anywhere.

Barcelona have shown little concern over the matter. Gavi has returned to wearing the number 30, as he is no longer a first-team member again. With Pedri missing through injury, Gavi has grown in importance recently.
