Diego Simeone sends thinly veiled criticism in the direction of Pep Guardiola

It seems that the Atletico Madrid-Manchester City Champions League quarter-final touched a significant amount of nerves.

After tempers were frayed on the pitch for much of the second half, culminating in a red card for Felipe, players from both sides continued their war of words, pushing and shoving down the tunnel.

Much as he was trying to calm matters down towards the end of the match, Diego Simeone also decided to spice things up in his post-match press conference. Marca were on hand to catch his thoughts on whether City manager Pep Guardiola had shown a lack of respect towards him.

“I don’t have to have an opinion on whether someone speaks well or not [of me].”

“Many times, those that have a large vocabulary, they are very intelligent and they praise you with contempt. But we aren’t so stupid, the ones that perhaps have smaller vocabulary.”

Simeone did then go on to say that City and Guardiola had deserved to advance through the tie, by virtue of scoring more goals. He was also keen to highlight the pride he has for Atelti’s style of football and their fans.

Manchester City will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with the first leg taking place on the 26th of April in Manchester.
