Bayern Munich are currently trying to deal with the fall out after a shock Champions League exit to Villarreal.
A late goal from Samuel Chukwueze sentenced the tie in the Yellow Submarine’s favour, sparking delirium amongst the Villarreal fans. Both Unai Emery and Dani Parejo were happy to get one over against Bayern Munich, having claimed the German giants lacked respect for them.
Much of the blame from the German perspective will likely fall on the shoulders of manager Julian Nagelsmann. Speaking after the match, Marca shared his views that the winner came as a result of a cultural mindset.
“We had 68% possession. If they defend with 8 players in the area it’s difficult to get into the game. The goal is typical of them when they recover the ball, it’s part of the game, it’s the Spanish mentality, something that the teams from the South do. I’m sorry if I’m saying something that doesn’t sit well. But I’m not going to try and blame the other team.”
Although Villarreal did set up to defend their lead, it is worth noting that Emery’s side did attack the Bavarians in the first leg and could have scored more. Regardless of what anyone says, Emery and Villarreal will feel they have had the last laugh.
