Where would Andreas Christensen fit into Xavi’s Barcelona starting XI plans?

Barcelona are said to be closing in on Chelsea full-back Andreas Christensen ahead of this summer.

Christensen is out of contract this summer, and he is likely to move on having struggled for regular action under Thomas Tuchel.

According to the latest reports, Barca have already engaged in talks with the centre-back and his representatives, hoping to strike a deal ahead of the summer.

It’s reported Barca have even made a second offer, with an improved salary and an extra year, to take the contract to five years.

And the Blaugrana are favourites to land the Dane, but where will he fit in?

Gerard Pique has shown he is still at a high level over recent weeks, and it’s clear Ronald Araujo is the centre-back Barca will build around.

Eric Garcia came in last summer with high hopes surrounding him, but his error-prone nature means Christensen likely finds himself ahead of the former Manchester City star.

The current Chelsea man isn’t, however, likely to go straight in ahead of Pique, despite the fact Pique won’t be able to play every week across all competitions next season, which is a key factor in this move.

He will likely have to battle Pique for a starting spot, though he would likely start in a back three system having shown he can play such a role well when called upon with Chelsea.

It will be interesting to see how the battle shapes up if Christensen does join, but it’s clear, given Barca’s current situation, they are not in a position to make any guarantees.

Though, it’s also clear Barca could do with Christensen as they look to build for a future beyond Pique and get better competition in the position.
