Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club cannot make any signings as things stand.
There have been plenty of rumours linking Barca with players ahead of the January transfer window, including the likes of Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo.
But very little has changed in terms of the club’s financial state which left them making very few signings over the summer.
The problem over the summer is that Barca were over their La Liga salary limit, and that prevents them from registering any new players unless they are worth 25% of any outgoings.
And months later, although things have improved to where Barca are around the limit rather than significantly over it, they are still unable to make additions.
Laporta told Marca: “Xavi has asked us to strengthen the squad and we are going to try to do it, but in this moment, we haven’t got any margin to do it.
“Therefore, in this moment we can’t, but we have to let the sporting department work.”
It seems Barcelona will indeed have to sell in order to buy in January, but it’s fair to say the list of assets they actually have that will raise money is getting shorter.
