Barcelona’s Junior Firpo celebrates ‘dream’ Champions League debut

Barcelona full-back Junior Firpo spoke of his delight at making his Champions League debut in Wednesday’s win over Borussia Dortmund.

The Dominican-born defender played the full 90 minutes as the Blaugrana secured their progression to the last 16 of the competition as group winners.

Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann all scored for the hosts – meaning all three of the attacking trident on the pitch netted, before Jadon Sancho’s late consolation for the German side.

“I have always really wanted to play in this tournament because it is a very beautiful competition and you always want to be in games like that. Without a doubt, it has been a dream night,” Firpo said, as cited by Diario Sport.

“Seeing the Camp Nou full and being able to complete a great game and secure our qualification has been very important for us.

“Before the game we talked in the dressing room about how important the three points were, and we completed a very good first 45 minutes, against a strong rival and that's why I feel happy and satisfied.”

The triumph secured the Blaugrana’s safe passage to the last 16 of the competition and confirmed their status as group winners – which could be significant in next month’s draw.

Firpo – who has featured in six La Liga games for the Catalan giants to date this campaign – moved to the Camp Nou in a deal worth an initial €18m from Real Betis this summer.
