Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez: Sergio Ramos legend will continue

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has heaped praise on his club’s captain Sergio Ramos after he set a Spanish international record.

Ramos won his 168th cap for the Spanish national team in Saturday’s draw against Norway, moving him past FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas for the nation.

“In addition to his qualities, which we all see, such as his technical ability and physicality, he has others (qualities) such as leadership and ambition that have made it become a legend, not only of Real Madrid and the Spanish team, but I would say that of world football,” Perez said, as cited by Marca.

“Those conditions remain in him as if he were starting in his career and I am convinced that the legend Sergio Ramos will continue.”

The Spain international made 41 starts for the club last season but was among a number of underperforming players as Madrid endured a tough campaign.

Perez went on to confirm reports this summer that the 33-year-old had requested to the club to be allowed to move to China on a free transfer.

However, the player went on to deny this in a press conference while no move away from the Spanish capital ever materialised.

The Spain captain has scored 85 goals for Madrid in 615 appearances across 14 years following a move from Sevilla and has won 168 caps for his nation – a joint record with former Madrid legend Casillas.

Ramos has won 20 trophies at the club, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns.
