Espanyol appoint ex Sevilla boss Pablo Machin

Espanyol have been appointed former Sevilla boss Pablo Machin after dismissing David Gallego, the club have confirmed.

Machin was famed for guiding Girona to their first ever promotion to the top-flight in 2017 and subsequently led them to a top-half finish using his 3-5-2 formation.

He was then appointed at Sevilla but was dismissed in March following the club’s exit from the Europa League at the Round of 16 stage, while struggling in their aim of a top four league finish.

Gallego replaced Rubi – now at the helm of Real Betis – this summer but had struggled in his early tenure, with defender Mario Hermoso and striker Borja Iglesias among the star departures from the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol are also competing in the Europa League this season and recorded an impressive 2-0 victory at CSKA Moscow on Thursday night following an underwhelming opening 1-1 draw at home to Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros.

The Catalan outfit are currently in 19th position in La Liga and have won just once from their opening eight matches in the division, with only winless Leganes below them.
