Lucas Hernandez: We don’t know if dad is dead or alive

Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez has admitted he does not know if his absent father Jean Francois is dead or alive.

Jean Francois – a former footballer who had stints at Rayo Vallecano and Atletico – left the family home over a decade ago and has not had contact since.

Lucas’s mother Laurence was then tasked with raising the current France international alongside his brother Theo, who joined Milan this summer from Real Madrid.

In an interview last year, former Atletico Madrid defender Lucas hit out at his dad who he claimed: “has failed in his role as a father.”

In a fresh interview with DAZN, he has said: “One day my father left and we never heard from him again. My brother and I had a complicated but beautiful childhood.

“I never tried to contact him. When I was young I thought about where he could be and I would have liked to know more. I know that he left because he did not love us. And if he did not love us then it was better for him to leave. About 16 or 17 have passed years since we haven't heard from him.

“I don't know where my father is, what he does, if he is still alive or not.”

Last year, Lucas had said: “Now that I am a father, I am even more aware of what he has done and that he has failed in his role as father.

“If I find him, then we will have a conversation, but what I cannot imagine is that I would renounce my son, I would never do it for anything in the world. Even if I have to sleep under a bridge for the happiness of my son then I will do it.”

Lucas joined Bayern Munich in an €80m move from Los Rojiblancos this summer and has made an instant impact in Niko Kovac’s side, while his brother Theo moved to Milan in a deal worth €20m.
