Frenkie De Jong hopeful of De Ligt reunion at FC Barcelona

New FC Barcelona star Frenkie De Jong is hopeful that former Ajax teammate Matthijs De Ligt will follow him to the Camp Nou.

After agreeing a €75m deal with the Dutch side for De Jong in January 2019, the Catalan side have been widely linked with a move for his former captain De Ligt.

The 19-year old defender has attracted admirers from across Europe, with Ajax confirming that he will leave the club this summer, but is destination is yet to be confirmed.

Ernesto Valverde's side were the early front runners to bring De Ligt to La Liga, however they are facing increasing competition from Serie A giants Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

"Of course I would be happy to see De Ligt here, De Jong said during his official unveiling as a FC Barcelona player.

"However that decision is not up to me.

"He has to make the decision that is right for him and for his family, so we will see where he goes."

Club President Josep Bartomeu was also asked about the De Ligt situation, during De Jong first press conference at the club, and he reiterated the club's stance.

"I have said for that I know where De Ligt will be playing next season, and I maintain that.

"I have read that Juventus are having problems negotiating with Ajax, so we will have to wait.

"When the time is right for the announcement, the player will do so, but I am confident that I already know where he will be playing."
