Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong will “go to Barcelona with great joy” after all-but helping his current side secure the Eredivisie title.
The central midfielder was instrumental as Ajax won 4-1 to virtually seal the Dutch title ahead of his €85m summer move to the Camp Nou.
Both de Jong’s current and future clubs suffered Champions League semi-final heartbreak last week as they both exited the competition after being the victims of stunning comebacks.
“I will go to Barcelona with great joy,” De Jong told reporters after Ajax defeated Utrecht, as cited by Marca.
“I saw the match between Liverpool and Barcelona, I do not know if Barca need me but the pity is that if it had been slightly different, they would have been in the final and could have won the treble.
“For Ajax it has been a fantastic season, although I would have liked to say goodbye with three titles, but it could not be.”
De has starred in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals this season, including in victories over Real Madrid and Juventus.
