Lorenzo Insigne set to renew at Napoli among Atletico Madrid interest

Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne is edging closer to a new deal at the club despite interest from Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

Marca cite a report in Sky Sports Italia that the player’s agent Mino Raiola apparently met with Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti and President Aurelio De Laurentiis over the terms.

Previous reports had claimed Atleti had lodged an offer of €50m for the star but the Italian club would hold out for double that price.

Ancelotti replaced Insigne early in the second half in their 1-0 loss against Arsenal last month and the forward didn’t take being substituted too well.

The captain refused to join his teammates on the bench, standing for the rest of the game, and was loudly whistled and jeered by some home fans.

Insigne was said to be growing tired of being the scapegoat and not receiving any support from the club, leading to speculation that he could now be open to the possibility of a move away from the San Paolo.

Earlier this month, Diario AS followed up on reports in Corriere dello Sport that Atleti have been monitoring the forward with the hope of a future deal.

The 27-year-old is Napoli’s captain and has netted 76 goals across 302 appearances in the first-team squad, while he has also been capped 30 times by the Italian national team.

Inter striker Mauro Icardi and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic have also been linked to Atleti.
