Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak ‘is the best goalkeeper in the world’ and he is ‘proud’ to have him at the club.
The Slovenian shot-stopper is set to extend his current deal at Los Rojiblancos – which runs through until June 2021 – by a further year which will, significantly, increase his €100m release clause.
Oblak has been a regular in Diego Simeone's starting line-up across the past four seasons and his renewal has long been seen as a priority.
“Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world and we are very lucky to have him in the squad,” Simeone told reporters after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo.
“I am very proud to have him in my team and for him to be in the dressing room at this club, he has improved a lot since he arrived at the club.
“When he first came, until February he had not played any games but he’s worked so hard to get a regular spot in the team.
“Right now, there is no doubt that for me he is the best goalkeeper in the world.”
The Slovenian international has developed into one of the world’s elite goalkeepers in Madrid since his €16m transfer from Benfica in 2014.
