Mundo Deportivo: Josep Bartomeu to meet with Ajax over De Ligt move

Barcelona will make another step in their pursuit of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this week with club president Josep Bartomeu set to speak with the Dutch club.

According to a report in Catalonian newspaper Mundo Deportivo this morning Bartomeu will make use of Tuesday's ECA General Assembly to meet with officials from Ajax.

The club have already negotiated one deal between them in 2019, with Bartomeu sealing a deal to bring Frenkie De Jong to the Nou Camp at the end of the season and La Blaugrana believe they can hold off the competition to land a deal for de Ligt.

No fee has been confirmed for the 19 year-old, however given his rising profile and the price of €75m, with a further €11m in add ons, that De Jong cost, the asking price for de Ligt could be close to the €100m mark.

With Thomas Vermaelen set to the leave at the end of the season when his contract expires, and Jeison Murillo returning to Valencia at the end of his loan spell, Barcelona know that central defence is a priority.

Injuries continue to be an issue for Samuel Umtiti, and with Gerard Pique nearing the end of his career, de Ligt is seen as his natural successor alongside Clement Lenglet.
