EU status puts Barcelona off Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez

Barcelona may curtail their pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez as he does not possess an EU passport, according to a report in Marca.

The Blaugrana have already fulfilled their three non-EU spots with Arthur, Arturo Vidal and Malcom – with the latter most likely to move away from the Camp Nou this summer.

Gomez is said to have a €50m release clause at Estadio Balaidos but should his side be relegated, this clause is set to halve to just €25m, making him imminently more affordable.

The Uruguayan striker netted 17 goals in La Liga last season in his first campaign in European football, leading to a series of top European clubs monitoring his progress.

Gomez has netted just once in his last 12 appearances while the Galician club have struggled in the absence of his strike partner Iago Aspas, who is currently side-lined through injury.
