Lyon confirm approach for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema

Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed the club tried to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema last summer.

The 31-year-old joined Los Blancos from the French club in the summer of 2009 in a €35m deal and he has gone on to become the sixth highest scorer in Madrid’s history.

“We talked to him about this last year and he was open to it,” Aulas told Tout Le Sport.

“But we could not get together the necessary economic figures, but one day it would be beautiful if he could come home.”

Benzema netted 66 goals in 148 appearances across five seasons for Lyon and has 22 goals to his name this season for Madrid.
