Villarreal reappoint Javi Calleja 50 days after sacking

Villarreal have reappointed Coach Javi Calleja to replace Luis Garcia Plaza, just 50 days after he was sacked by the Spanish top flight club.

Calleja spent 13 years at the club across roles as a player, youth coach and Coach of the first-team, before being replaced by Luis Garcia Plaza midway through December.

At the time of his sacking, Villarreal president Fernando Roig had commented that Calleja would remain ‘loved by everyone’ at the club and he has now returned.

The Yellow Submarine are just one place off the foot of La Liga and the club are without a win in nine domestic matches.

The club were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Espanyol and lost 3-0 at Valencia on Saturday, which turned out to be Garcia Plaza’s last match at the helm.

Garcia Plaza’s only victory in charge was a triumph at home to Spartak Moscow in the Europa League group stage, on 13 December.
