Atletico Madrid deny Bayern Munich’s deal for Lucas Hernandez

Atletico Madrid have formally denied a report in Marca that defender Lucas Hernandez had agreed a switch to Bayern Munich.

The Madrid-based daily newspaper claims Bayern have triggered the player’s €85m release clause and agreed personal terms, concluding a four-year contract.

The 22-year-old only signed a new contract with Los Colchoneros in June but Bayern were said to have promised him to be a cornerstone of their project.

“Relating to the information published in Marca has stated about Bayern Munich’s supposed deal with our player Lucas Hernandez,” read an Atleti statement.

“Atletico Madrid wants to confirm that in conversation with Hernandez, he denies the existence of such a deal and his intention to leave Atletico.

“The excellent relationship between our club and the German side has cause Bayern Munich themselves to deny the supposed move today in a conversation between the two clubs.”

Lucas broke through for Atleti during the 2015-16 campaign and has gone on to make 105 appearances under Diego Simeone, winning a Europa League and European Super Cup.

Equally adept at left-back and centre-back, he was also part of the France team who won the World Cup in Russia.

Bayern, for their part, have plans of overhauling their first team after a poor start to the season and their lack of impact in the Champions League.
