Barcelona’s Rafinha Alcantara ordered to pay Adidas €1m

Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcantara must wear his Adidas sportswear or face a €1m fine, a Dutch court has ruled.

The German sports manufacturer took the midfielder to court in July for wearing Mizuno shoes, although the player contested his contract with the company had ended the previous month.

The Brazilian began his relationship with Adidas in 2011 but moved to end the deal after ‘not gaining sufficient support’ from the company when suffering injuries between 2015 and 2017, report Reuters.

However, Adidas had a five-year extension clause in the deal which Rafinha’s defence team – led by his father and agent Mazinho, a former player himself – was not clear in the dealing.

The Amsterdam court ruled however that Rafinha had to pay €10k for each day of the contract breached, up to a maximum of €1m.

Rafinha is currently out for the season with a torn cruciate knee ligament.
