Javi Calleja: Villarreal deserved Celta Vigo defeat

Javi Calleja accepts Villarreal deserved to lose 3-2 to Celta Vigo on Saturday as ‘they scored two goals and knocked us down’.

Villarreal went 3-0 down to Brais Mendez, Okay Yokuslu and Maxi Gomez goals before Carlos Bacca pulled two back in the final 10 minutes, leaving Calleja’s side all the way down in 17th place, just three points above La Liga’s relegation places.

“We had high hopes but didn’t play well,” the Coach said after the game.

“We weren’t at ease and Celta took over the match. It was difficult for us to play fluidly and they scored at moments that hurt us.

“The team didn’t play well and weren’t good with our finishing. We lacked ruthlessness when it mattered.

“We were lacking a bit at the start of the second half, then they scored two goals and knocked us down. Any blow hurts you.

“Hopefully we know how to put things right because there’s still a lot of the season left and we need some consistency.

“We’d improved and competed well. It was the right time to move forward, but now we have two games until the Christmas break and we have to get our sensations back.

“We have to do that in Europe and then pick up three points at Huesca.”
