Report: Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong a ‘priority’ for Barcelona

Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong is reportedly a ‘priority’ signing for Barcelona, who see him as Sergio Busquets’ heir.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca consider De Jong a ‘strategic’ addition for several reasons, the first being his quality, which is ‘beyond doubt’.

Secondly, his versatility allows him to play through the middle, on the right or left of a three-man midfield or even as a centre-back.

Blaugrana general manager Pep Segura only admitted on Thursday that the 21-year-old ‘has the profile’ desired by the club.

However, the newspaper warns that while Barca are ‘calm’ over De Jong’s intention to sign for them, Ajax are refusing to enter negotiations at this stage.

Furthermore, the Dutch club are not expected to take ‘less than €70m’ as they hope his performances will keep driving his price up.

Nonetheless, MD is confident the Netherlands starlet can be ‘secured’ in January, despite Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City also ‘pressing hard’.
