Spain’s Sergio Ramos accepts defeat to ‘world-class’ England

Sergio Ramos conceded Spain were beaten by a ‘world-class’ England side on Monday but was encouraged by his team’s ‘great reaction’.

“The beautiful thing about football is that it gives you an opportunity to turn things around,” he said after La Roja’s 3-2 defeat in the Nations League.

“We paid for our first-half performance and ultimately the only positive thing was our great reaction in the second half. We pegged them back.

“It’s a shame because it was our objective to round off a great run of games. It didn’t go as planned, but now we have one more game to put all our tension into.

“England are world-class opponents with some very dangerous players. We had to forget the first half and turn it around in the time it took them to go 3-0 up.

“The positive thing was the reaction of the team, and I thank the city of Seville. It was a pleasure to play here. The fans spur you on.

“It’s a shame that we couldn’t answer them. Let them believe in this group.”
