Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema nominated for Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid forwards Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are among the nominees for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

The 30 candidates are being announced in stages throughout Monday and the duo – who both scored in this season’s Champions League final – are two of the first five candidates.

In what is an alphabetic release, Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and Paris St-Germain attacker Edinson Cavani are also contenders.

The Ballon d'Or, an award presented since 1956, is handed to the best player of that year with the ceremony in Paris on 3 October.

The duo’s former Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo has won each of the last two editions while Luka Modric won FIFA’s The Best award this year.
