Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui rues CSKA ‘bad luck’

Julen Lopetegui rued Real Madrid’s ‘bad luck’ against CSKA Moscow but insisted he had ‘complete confidence’ in Karim Benzema to end his goal drought.

“We failed to take the countless chances we had,” the Coach said after Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat.

“We hit the woodwork three times and weren’t lucky. We still tried every avenue, but it was a scrappy match that started with an unexpected situation, which turned out to be the perfect scenario for them, plus we had bad luck.

“We must keep insisting for goals, continue to create chances and have faith in our finishing.

“I have no doubt that the team will get back among the goals and wins. Tonight isn’t easy, it was a game we had to win and we’re going back with a defeat.

“We have to take the criticism and think about Alaves. We weren’t invincible against Roma, just as we’re not so bad right now. These are situations in football, which we’re going to reverse.

“Every player in the squad has our maximum confidence and affection. Benzema’s played every game and we have complete confidence in him.

“Goals come in runs. He started the season in fantastic form, and with hard work he’ll see them again, but goals aren’t only Karim’s responsibility.

“Reguilon had a very good game, which was difficult and complex for him to make his debut in. He’s a positive to come out of this defeat.

“Carvajal has a small muscle injury in his calf. We have to wait for tests. Modric needed a rest and we didn’t want him to play at all.”
