Real Madrid confirm Marcelo absence

Real Madrid have confirmed defender Marcelo has a muscular injury and is out of action for an indefinite period of time.

The Brazilian defender limped off in the second half of Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat at Sevilla and will not feature in Saturday’s derby against Atletico Madrid.

“Following the tests carried out today by the Real Madrid medical team, on our player Marcelo, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg,” read a Real Madrid statement.

“His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

Madrid do not have a natural left-back as back-up to Marcelo following Theo Hernandez’s loan exit to Real Sociedad, but it is possible Nacho Fernandez, who played right-back against Sevilla, could switch.

Dani Carvajal is set to return for Saturday’s mouth-watering tie, but Isco remains unavailable after an operation on his appendix.
