Real Madrid join race for Ajax’ De Jong

Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.

El Desmarque cite a report in OK Diario that Madrid have scouted the Dutchman and rate him rightly, potentially seeing him as an upgrade to Mateo Kovacic, currently on loan at Chelsea.

Earlier this week, El Mundo Deportivo cited English club Tottenham’s interest in the midfielder, whom they were prepared to pay €50m for.

The 21-year-old made his Netherlands debut on Thursday and has already played 10 times for the Amsterdam club this season.

Last season, De Jong registered seven assists from 22 Eredivisie appearances while Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars ruled out a sale for the midfielder.
