‘Leganes crashed & burned, but…’

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted Leganes ‘crashed and burned’ against Real Madrid but praised VAR for awarding Los Blancos their second goal.

“Until the second goal the team were involved in the game,” the Coach said after Los Pepineros’ 4-1 defeat on Saturday.

“After that, we crashed and burned, they gained confidence and they created a difference in their favour.

“We didn’t see much chance of a comeback. Through the mistakes we made, they created chances. It was a test for us.

“VAR is there to help us so that there is justice in the tight calls. We were surprised last week that it wasn’t used for a handball in the box, but today it did and that’s how it should be.

“If the referee and everyone thinks it should be used then it’s something positive, but the minutes we lose don’t stop the controversy from being talked about for the next week.

“The team were hit hard by [Madrid’s] second goal because we had the idea of trying something different in the second half but had nothing to say.”
