Madrid put four past Leganes

Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema were back among the goals as Real Madrid eased to a 4-1 victory over Leganes on Saturday.

Madrid risked another giant-killing against Leganes when Guido Carrillo's penalty levelled things up just before half-time, but Benzema's brace and a Sergio Ramos penalty put their neighbours out of sight for a third straight win in La Liga.

Thibaut Courtois finally made his official debut for Los Merengues, replacing Keylor Navas in goal after he conceded five goals in the side’s opening three matches of the season.

Elsewhere, two other changes from last weekend’s 4-1 win at Girona saw Nacho Fernandez and Luka Modric come in for Raphael Varane and Isco.

Mariano Diaz was also a substitute, just two days after he returned to the Santiago Bernabeu from Olympique Lyonnais.

Madrid had won five of their six meetings with Leganes but lost 2-1 at home to their capital rivals in the Copa del Rey last season.

Bale continued his rich vein of form by rifling home Dani Carvajal’s header across goal on the volley, which crossed the line despite Leganes’ best efforts to keep it out.

Casemiro then tripped Javi Eraso in Madrid’s box, allowing Guido Carrillo to score his first-ever goal for Los Pepineros, sending Thibaut Courtois the wrong way from the spot.

However, Benzema headed the hosts back in the lead after VAR showed the Frenchman’s marker pulling his shirt from a cross.

Toni Kroos fired a delightful, first-time volley inches wide of Cuellar’s goal, but Luka Modric was able to tee up Benzema for a drilled finish into the goalkeeper’s bottom-left corner.

Madrid then made sure of the points after Unai Bustinza had sliced through Marco Asensio in the box. Up stepped Ramos, who converted the subsequent spot-kick.
