La Liga to probe Valladolid pitch

La Liga has announced that it will investigate the state of Real Valladolid’s pitch during their match against Barcelona on Saturday.

Ousmane Dembele’s second-half goal gave Barca a 1-0 win at Valladolid, but the biggest talking point was that of the Jose Zorrilla pitch, which had only been re-laid four days before the match and was seen to come apart in the players’ hands.

That fuelled angry appraisals from Blaugrana trio Ernesto Valverde, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets, who branded the turf ‘disgraceful’ and ‘beach-like’.

“The state of Jose Zorrilla’s turf didn’t meet the minimum conditions required for a competition such as La Liga,” tweeted Liga chief Javier Tebas.

“Evidently, the corresponding disciplinary file has been opened to apportion the blame.”

It comes barely a week after the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) criticised the League’s deal for games to be played in the US.
