Barca still keen on De Jong

Barcelona are still understood to be eager to bring Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong to the Camp Nou this summer.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde sees the 21-year-old as the ideal long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets, although he has been filling in at centre-back in pre-season for the Dutch club.

Even so, Ajax sporting director and former Arsenal player Marc Overmars has made it clear Ajax are not prepared to sell any of their promising youngsters just yet.

“None of our young players are for sale and I’ve told that to any interested clubs,” Overmars recently told De Telegraaf, regarding De Jon, Donny van de Beek and Matthijs de Ligt.

“Let them come back next year. Allow them to play 40 games for Ajax this season. They won’t be leaving even for ridiculous money.”

However, a failure to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League could alter that situation.
