‘Modric would’ve won Ballon d’Or, if…’

Dejan Lovren believes Real Madrid’s Luka Modric is ‘the best midfielder in the world’ and would have won the Ballon d’Or ‘if he was German or Spanish’.

Modric earned rave reviews for his performance during Croatia’s 3-0 victory over Argentina at the World Cup, while playing a key role in Madrid’s run of three straight Champions Leagues.

“He’s perhaps the best midfielder in the world,” the Liverpool defender reporters.

“If he played for Germany or Spain, he’d receive much more attention and perhaps he’d be named the best player in the world.

“However, since we’re a small country, he receives less attention than it deserves. There’s a different atmosphere to that of four years ago in Brazil.

“Now we feel we can go far. We’re all mature and we’re feeling confident.”
