Monchi: Roma stopped Messi but…

Roma sporting director Monchi believes his side ‘stopped’ Lionel Messi but were undone by ‘mistakes’ from the referee.

The Giallorossi crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night but did not help themselves by scoring two own goals, while they had two strong penalty appeals turned down.

“The result does not reflect what we saw on the pitch and it is far too harsh on us,” Monchi told reporters.

“Before the game we said it was important to stop Lionel Messi and we did that. We lacked a bit of luck and ruthlessness in front of goal, plus there was the referee, who I am sure made mistakes.

“There were two penalties that everyone saw and they did influence the game.

“We beat Chelsea 3-0 this season, so we must take that attitude and try to go forward.”
