AFA urge Barca: “rest Messi”

Barcelona have been urged to play Lionel Messi in fewer games by Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia.

The Argentine star has played 34 matches this campaign including all 23 La Liga matches – starting 22 of those – ahead of this summer’s World Cup, with the AFA expressing concern.

“We are very happy with the high level of performance our stars are playing at,” Tapia told Tyc Sports, as quoted by ESPN.

“Sergio Aguero's play is terrific and Messi is always there, high up. This is important for us, the executives, and the coaching staff to see the level that he is at.

“With Messi, we spoke about looking after him, playing less than he has, and if there are games that don't merit Messi to be present, then for him not to play in order to take care of himself a bit more I think that's good.”
